Multi-parametric ultrasonic monitoring of novel, non-thermal plasma therapy for improved treatment of oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (Projet Sorbonne Université)

Le projet de Lori Bridal (ITD) et de François LEMOINE (Centre d’Immunologie et des Maladies infectieuses CIMI-Paris)  “Multi-parametric UltraSonic monitoring of novel, non-thermal Plasma therapy for improved treatment of Oral Cavity Squamous Cell Carcinoma” est soutenu par Sorbonne Universités.

Abstract  :

ProjetIUISBridalLemoineExposure to neutral ionized gas known as non-thermal plasma (NTP) is used in dermatology to treat dermal inflammation. It has demonstrated promising anti-tumor effects associated with creation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) that can modify endothelial cell proliferation and enhance apoptosis. This project applies a prototype NTP system in an orthotopic murine model for oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (OCSCC). Therapeutic effect will be investigated and monitored noninvasively using multiparametric ultrasonic cartography (microvascular function, tissue stiffness and parameters of tissue microstructure). Image-based assessment of tumor modifications will be confronted with invasive reference measurements (immunological and histological markers, interstitial fluid pressure) to better understand NTP’s therapeutic effect and to validate noninvasive monitoring techniques. Preclinical results will be used to develop strategy for transfer to clinical trials for OCSCC patients – whose recruitment at Pitié-Salpêtrière hospital is one of the largest in France.
